I would like to extend my congratulations to CGPS Board of Directors Chair Carroll L. Estes, Ph.D., for being honored by the University of California—San Francisco (UCSF) with the 2014 UCSF Medal. The USCF medal is awarded to courageous leaders like Dr. Estes for elevating UCSF’s mission to “advance health worldwide.”

carollA renowned writer, researcher, and policy expert, Dr. Estes is the founder and former director of the UCSF Institute for Health & Aging and professor emerita in the UCSF Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences and School of Nursing. She received her B.A. from Stanford University, M.A. from Southern Methodist University, and a Ph.D. from UC-San Diego.

I first met Dr. Estes when I was asked to join the board of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare. Dr. Estes has remained an important mentor to me over the years and her tremendous insight and guidance has been appreciated greatly. I’m thrilled to have Dr. Estes serve as the first Chair of the CGPS Board of Directors. As Chair, Dr. Estes plays a key role in providing strategic direction and oversight for all of CGPS’ work.

I encourage you to watch the following video produced by UCSF to learn more about Dr. Estes and her incredible work. Congratulations, Dr. Estes!
